On Trend | Black Windows

The next time you browse through the gorgeous interiors in a Pottery Barn or RH catalog take notice of the windows. They’re big, bold, and more and more often today, black. The black window trend started becoming mainstream on the exterior of the home over a decade ago and has migrated to the interior of the home in recent years. However, the black window aesthetic is certainly not new; it pays homage to the historic windows found in centuries-old factory buildings and its wrought iron feel is rooted in history. In a Modern Farmhouse or Urban Modern home, black windows can provide a bold industrial accent to counterbalance natural wood surfaces and a neutral color palette.

It’s no surprise that this trend has grown in popularity over recent years. Top designers and architects are using black windows on the interior of the home to make a bold statement and accentuate contemporary ideals. There are many advantages to using black windows throughout the interior of the home. Much like how a bold black picture frame enhances the look of a photograph, a black window frame emphasizes and enriches the view through the window. Stark white walls with sleek black windows can evoke the feel of an art gallery – adding drama to the room and making the environment surrounding the home appear to be a work of art. Furthermore, black windows often look best undressed, saving the homeowner the expense of costly window treatments.

PRO TIP

Black windows often, but not always, look best without window treatments. Consider using black windows on the first floor where public spaces typically don’t require the extra privacy of curtains or blinds (consider using low profile black roller shades or blinds if necessary). Then use traditional white windows on the second floor where window coverings are necessary for private spaces. However, be certain that all the windows appear consistent when viewing from the exterior.

How to achieve the look

Regardless of what style home you have, pair black windows with stark white walls and make sure that only the window sash is black (the casing and frame should be white like the walls). Black windows should make a bold statement but should not be overpowering in the room. Create consistency throughout the home by complementing black windows with similar black accents such as wrought iron or black metal stair parts, furniture frames, hardware, and lighting fixtures.

Reminder: If you’re planning on painting the interior of your wood windows black, remember to order all the interior hardware with a black or oil rubbed bronze finish.

CONTEMPORARY MODERN

Contemporary Modern homes demand black casement, awning, and direct set windows with no grills. Windows and patio doors should be expansive, covering entire walls from floor to ceiling if possible.

FARMHOUSE MODERN

The Farmhouse Modern look calls for double hung, casement, or awning windows with traditional grill patterns. However, make sure grills are thin, sleek, and low profile, otherwise they will look too bold and overbearing.
