We’re excited to share our August 2026 Featured Project of the Month from the Horner 2026 Wall Calendar. When the homeowners turned to acclaimed architects John MacDonald, AIA, and Anthony Frausto, AIA, of Morehouse MacDonald and Associates, Inc. to create a sprawling estate on a Caribbean island in the Lesser Antilles, the architects selected Horner Millwork and Kolbe Windows & Doors for the home’s custom window and door package. Their vision was a contemporary compound where multiple generations could gather, with private residences, shared living spaces and open-air pavilions connected by gardens and covered walkways.

Supporting the Project from Nearly 2,000 Miles Away
Nearly 2,000 miles away in Somerset, Horner Architectural Sales Representative Mike Harvey and the Horner Architectural Services Group worked through the many details needed to support a project of this scale in a demanding coastal and tropical environment. The windows and doors needed to complement the home’s natural materials and expansive views while also providing the performance required for an exposed island location. Every unit had to be carefully specified, detailed and prepared for container shipment to the island, where there would be little room for error once construction was underway.

Custom Kolbe Windows and Doors for an Island Setting
The resulting window and door package included custom Kolbe Heritage Impact casements and entry doors, along with expansive TerraSpan lift-and-slide door systems. Crafted with sapele on both the interior and exterior, the windows and doors were finished in a custom stain with two coats of clear sealer to complement the rich mahogany used throughout the estate. Laminated Low-E impact glass, custom sapele impact glazing beads and stainless-steel hardware provided the performance needed for the island setting. Several of the four-panel lift-and-slide systems are nearly 14 feet wide, allowing entire rooms to open to the covered terraces and tropical landscape beyond.

The Expertise Behind the Products
From the first product selections in Massachusetts to the finished home overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the distance and complexity of the job made Horner’s role especially important. Horner Millwork was proud to provide the technical knowledge, detailed coordination and custom window and door products needed to support such an ambitious architectural vision.

In this bedroom, a wall of glass opens the room to the balcony and Caribbean views beyond. The nearly 14-foot-wide TerraSpan lift-and-slide system is paired with operable Heritage casements, all finished in the project’s custom stain.

Positioned above the tub, this custom Kolbe Heritage window unit turns the tropical landscape into part of the room. Crafted from sapele wood, these windows feature laminated Low-E impact glass, black spacers and custom sapele glazing beads.

Tucked beneath a shaded porch, this custom Kolbe Heritage door pair creates a warm welcome to one of the private residences. Each sapele door panel features a large glass lite with laminated Low-E glass over a raised wood panel, along with oil-rubbed hardware details.

A nearly 14-foot-wide TerraSpan system allows this bedroom to feel completely connected to the surrounding landscape. Its four full-lite panels, flush-mount sill and custom bottom rail keep the design clean while providing an impressive opening to the terrace.

Here, the home’s indoor-outdoor design comes into full view, with a four-panel TerraSpan system opening the living space toward the sea and a paired Heritage door providing access to a second terrace. Both were crafted in sapele and finished to coordinate with the rich woodwork used throughout the estate.

This tall, narrow Heritage outswing door frames a view into the landscaped courtyard and provides the transition between the estate’s separate living areas. The custom sapele unit includes laminated Low-E glazing, multipoint lock preparation and oil-rubbed adjustable hinges.
