Every month, we take a closer look at a home featured in the Horner Wall Calendar, sharing the story behind the project and the people who helped bring it together. This month, we’re heading to Cape Cod for a newly built coastal compound designed for gathering, entertaining, and making the most of life by the sea.

Built by Paul Gallagher of Gallagher Custom Builders, with interiors by Sarah Jane Baker Designs and architecture by Roger Danner, this home brings together traditional coastal gambrel shingle-style architecture with the comforts of a new construction home. Horner sales representative Matthew Barnes worked closely with Paul and Sarah throughout the project, helping coordinate the fiberglass exterior doors, custom interior MDF doors, sliding barn doors and hardware, stock and custom mouldings and millwork, and stair parts used throughout the home.

LET’S BEGIN OUR HOUSE TOUR AT THE FRONT DOOR

The exterior doors immediately reinforce the home’s coastal character. Horner supplied Masonite Smooth Fiberglass Heritage Series doors with flat panels and flush-glazed glass, a clean and classic choice for a new Cape Cod home. The Heritage Series features historically inspired designs, making it a natural fit for coastal architecture where timeless proportions and everyday performance both matter.

These doors offer the look of a traditionally constructed wood door, but with far less maintenance over time. Each exterior door unit was custom assembled in our manufacturing facility in Somerset, MA using the Masonite Performance Door System with a full composite frame, helping the doors stand up to the intense coastal weather that come with life on the Cape.

A LIVING SPACE FRAMED BY MILLWORK

At the center of the home is a large, bright living area that brings together the kitchen, dining space, and living room. The space was designed for gathering, but it is the millwork that gives it definition, warmth, and architectural character. Horner supplied the mouldings and millwork throughout this space, including the baseboards, crown moulding, casings, window and door headers, nickel gap accent wall, mantel shelf, and coffered ceiling. The ceiling detail defines the living room within the open layout, giving it a more luxurious look while still allowing the kitchen, dining, and living areas to flow together.

The fireplace accent wall is one of the most beautiful features in the home. A nickel gap shiplap accent wall creates a clean coastal backdrop, while the thick white oak mantel shelf, custom made in our Somerset, MA woodworking shop, adds warmth and weight to the fireplace. On either side, a pair of Masonite fiberglass doors leads out to the screened-in porch, creating a balanced composition and an easy connection to outdoor living.

Sarah Baker has an incredible eye for design, and she worked closely with Matt Barnes to select the millwork details throughout the home. The overall look is coastal, clean, and timeless, with architectural details that make every room feel curated.

THE PARTY PANTRY

Just off the main living area, the party pantry is one of the home’s most useful spaces. It gives the homeowners a dedicated place for prep, storage, and serving while entertaining, keeping the main kitchen uncluttered and ready for guests.

Horner supplied the barn doors and hardware for this opening. In a space like this, a set of barn doors is a smart choice. They save the clearance a swinging door would need, keep the opening easy to access, and add a strong design detail that was clearly meant to be both functional and beautiful.

CUSTOM MDF INTERIOR DOORS THROUGHOUT

Horner supplied custom MDF interior doors throughout, allowing each opening to be built with the correct proportions instead of adjusted from a stock size. Typically, smaller or unusual openings require standard doors to be trimmed to fit. When that happens, the stiles, rails, and panels can lose their architectural proportions. The door may technically fit, but the design no longer looks correct.

In this home, each door was built for its exact opening. An extra-wide utility door, a narrow closet door, and a pair of closet doors can all share the same stile and rail proportions because each one was properly sized from the start. That consistency carries through the entire home.

The smooth painted finish of the MDF interior doors is another highlight. The Gallagher team did an exceptional job with the finish work, giving the doors the look and feel of finished furniture rather than standard building materials.

A LAUNDRY ROOM WITH A SPACE-SAVING BARN DOOR

Horner also supplied the barn door and hardware for the laundry room. This is another place where the sliding function makes everyday sense. Laundry rooms often have tight clearances, especially when cabinets, counters, hampers, and appliances are all part of the layout. By using a barn door, the opening stays easy to access without taking up floor space. The stainless steel hardware also gives the laundry room a more modern, designed look, bringing a little extra style to one of the home’s most hardworking spaces.

A FRESH TAKE ON A COASTAL STAIR

The staircase brings another layer of custom detail to the home. Horner supplied the stair parts, including the handrail, treads, risers, box newels, and balusters. The custom Metro rail gives the stair a cleaner, modern profile while still fitting naturally within the home’s coastal style. The box newel features a Metro-inspired cap, a small but important detail that makes the stair feel tailored to this specific home. Together, these details give the stair a clean, updated look while keeping it grounded in the home’s coastal architecture.
