Every so often, a project comes along that feels special from the start. This month’s featured project from our 2026 Horner wall calendar is a whole-home renovation by J. M. Bryson Construction Management Inc. What began as an existing, dated home was carefully and completely reworked into something that now feels entirely new and fully custom in every sense. Nothing about this renovation feels accidental. Every choice was made with purpose, and every detail reflects a shared commitment to doing things the right way.

From the earliest conversations, builder John Bryson worked closely with Horner sales representative Richard Kallianidis, whose deep knowledge of interior trim helped guide many of the design decisions throughout the home. That kind of collaboration is where great projects take shape, and this one is a perfect example of what’s possible when experience and trust are at the center of the process.

COOPER PREASSEMBLED STAIRCASE

One of the most memorable features in the home is waiting right at the entry. The Cooper Stairworks preassembled staircase was custom built in our woodworking shop in Somerset, Massachusetts. With its dramatic curves, thick walnut treads, custom box newels, seamless hardwood handrail, and open risers, it immediately sets the tone for the rest of the home. The staircase was engineered so the stringers are fully structural, allowing the stair to remain unsupported, creating the effect of a floating stair. The stair feels modern without feeling trendy and bold without feeling overworked. It is as much sculptural artwork as it is functional architecture.

The placement of the stair adds another layer of thoughtfulness. Positioned in front of a large window, the stair could have easily blocked the natural light that illuminates the foyer. Instead, the ingenious open riser design allows sunlight to move freely through the space. Throughout the day, the light shifts and changes as it passes through the staircase, making the entry feel dynamic from morning to evening. Open riser stairs demand careful planning and a thorough understanding of building codes, and this design reflects the expertise of the Cooper Stairworks design team in every detail. Even the transition from floor to floor was thoughtfully executed, as the curved stair to the second floor flows seamlessly into a straight run leading down to the basement.

THOUGHTFUL MILLWORK THROUGHOUT

That same attention carries through the rest of the home in the millwork. Horner supplied mouldings and interior doors throughout, and the trim details play a quiet but essential role in shaping the interior. Window and door heads and casings, base moulding, crown moulding, coffered ceilings, wainscoting, wall paneling, and custom curved trim were all thoughtfully selected and beautifully integrated.

The interior of the home feels layered, luxurious, and cohesive without ever feeling too ornate or forced. A special shout-out to J. M. Bryson’s finish carpenters and painters, who executed the trim work with exceptional skill. We provided the pieces, and their craftsmanship brought them to life.

One detail that stands out is found in the hallways. Integrated LED lighting was built directly into the baseboard design, concealed between the flat stock and the base cap. At night, the soft glow gently lights the pathways, making the home easier to navigate while adding a subtle sense of drama. During the day, the lighting strips disappear entirely into the shadow line, leaving the trim clean and uninterrupted. It’s a thoughtful solution that reflects the level of care poured into every inch of the project.
