This month’s featured project from our 2025 Horner Wall Calendar features a Cooper Preassembled Stair. When Hutker Architects designed this home, they envisioned a staircase that would do more than connect one floor to the next. It would serve as a defining architectural feature, shaping the interior and setting the tone for the space around it. To bring that vision to reality, Serpa Construction turned to our stair experts at Cooper Stairworks. Together, the team transformed drawings into craft, producing a stair that is both refined and enduring.
Built in Somerset, MA // Inside our Somerset, MA plant, the Cooper Stairworks team engineered and assembled each component under controlled conditions to ensure accuracy from the first cut to the final fit. Once complete, the stair was delivered to the site ready to install, saving valuable time for the builder while guaranteeing a seamless installation. With decades of experience, Cooper Stairworks has perfected a process that delivers stairs with consistent quality, while also providing cost and time efficiency for our partners in the field.
The Signature Detail // The most unique feature of this stair is the tread and riser design. Each tread and riser appears to be formed from solid white oak and mitered together at each edge. Instead of traditional stair joinery, the two planes meet cleanly to create a crisp corner that emphasizes the geometry of each step. From the side, the stair reveals a continuous band of oak that rises in a precise, consistent pattern. The effect is intentional and modern, highlighting both the sharp lines of the design and the natural character of the wood.
Two Runs Seamlessly Stacked // The staircase rises in two U-shaped runs, stacked one above the other. Sections of the structure are left partially unsupported, giving the stair a lighter presence as it moves upward from the first floor to the third floor. The open construction allows light to filter through and maintains the sense of space within the home.
Finishing Touches // Slim powder-coated black balusters rise to meet a streamlined white oak handrail. The contrast between the dark metal and warm wood adds definition while keeping the overall look simple and clean. These elements frame the stair without overpowering it, allowing the unique tread and riser detail to remain the focus.
Collaboration in Motion // This stair feels fully integrated into the architecture of the home. It is structure and design, function and focal point. Most importantly, it reflects the results of true collaboration. Hutker Architects set the vision, Serpa Construction coordinated the build, and the Cooper Stairworks team engineered and crafted the stair to exacting standards.
