This month’s featured project from our 2025 Horner Wall Calendar is a coastal kitchen renovation that turned a cramped layout into a space that’s both beautiful and functional. Tucked inside a cherished summer home in coastal Rhode Island, this kitchen remodel is proof that smart design and great communication can overcome even the trickiest design challenges.
A Remote Renovation, Seamlessly Executed // Because the renovation took place over the winter, the homeowner was away at her southern residence throughout most of the project. That meant that much of the planning, design, and decision-making had to be handled remotely. Fortunately, Horner kitchen designer Mike Sollecito was up to the task. With expert communication and a strong design process, Mike kept the homeowner informed and confident every step of the way. Using detailed renderings, video calls, and plenty of collaboration, he guided the project smoothly from concept to completion.
Designing For Flow And Function // The existing kitchen had a number of spatial challenges, including an awkwardly placed structural column and a wall of closets that made the space feel tight and closed-in. The solution? A fresh layout that removed walls, replaced closets with custom pantry cabinetry, and cleverly integrated the structural column into a new island design. This not only improved flow but added much-needed functionality and storage.
Coastal Inspiration With a Timeless Twist // The homeowner wanted a classic coastal vibe, favoring whites and blues but aiming to keep things timeless. Kemper cabinets in crisp White were selected for the perimeter, paired with a bold Maritime Blue island for contrast. Cambria Portrush quartz countertops by East Coast Countertops brought a coastal feel with veining that tied the color palette together. A wet bar area and stone accent behind the stove added visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Smart Design, Smooth Execution // Contractor Joe Borland was instrumental in the success of the project, helping keep everything running smoothly during the homeowner’s absence. His attention to detail and commitment to quality brought the renovation to life beautifully and ensured every element came together seamlessly. The customer was thrilled with the final result and credited Joe and Mike for making renovation the process easy and enjoyable.
