Featured Project // May 2024

Introducing May’s featured project from the 2024 Horner Wall Calendar: an extraordinary Cooper Preassembled Stair, meticulously crafted in our very own woodworking shop right here in Somerset, MA. This scissor-style stair graces the main foyer of a luxurious coastal Massachusetts home built by Colclough Construction, captivating all who enter with its grand presence.

Exceptional Details // Designed to complement the Nantucket style of the residence, this stair features primed poplar components paired with rich hardwood stair parts to add interest and charm throughout. Each intricate detail, from the rectangular tread brackets to the hand-carved pineapple finials adorning the newel caps, reflects a commitment to precision craftsmanship reminiscent of historic grand homes.

Thank You // We extend our heartfelt thanks to Colclough Construction and Catalano Architects for entrusting Horner Millwork and Cooper Preassembled Stairs with this exceptional project. We’re equally grateful to the homeowners for allowing us to capture and share the beauty of their remarkable residence. It’s our privilege to contribute to projects that showcase the artistry and craftsmanship of Cooper Preassembled Stairs.

The Symbolism of Pineapples in Historic Architecture // During the colonial period in America, pineapples were a symbol of hospitality, often incorporated into architectural elements such as door knockers, gateposts, and finials to greet and welcome guests. In addition to hospitality, the rarity and exoticism of pineapples represented wealth and luxury in affluent homes.

The rift and quarter-sawn white oak treads perfectly match the flooring, while the traditional sapele wood handrail complements the tone of the treads while also offering a tighter grain and sleek look.

Exquisite details, such as these rectangular tread brackets, reflect a commitment to precision craftsmanship reminiscent of historic grand homes.

The treads feature a plank nosing and a white oak cove for a more elevated appearance.

The primed box newels with recessed panels and custom-turned balusters exude regal charm while staying true to coastal New England styling.
